Primary and secondary school students

This group includes students in regular as well as special primary education and all students in secondary education (VMBO, HAVO, VWO, VAVO).

Registration

If you register your child at a primary or secondary school – or at another educational institution offering secondary education – DUO will process personal data and store it in the register of education participants. The data stored in this register is used by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to fund educational institutions, by the Inspectorate of Education to carry out its supervisory duties, by municipalities to supervise compliance with the Compulsory Education Act, by educational institutions to implement admission and enrolment procedures, and by other administrative bodies to perform their statutory duties.

If you are a full-time VMBO, HAVO, VWO, VSO or VAVO student and you are 18 years of age or older, your data will be used to collect tuition fees (VAVO) and to provide financial support (school contribution and education cost allowance).

Types of personal data

DUO uses different categories of personal data to manage school registrations:

  • personal details, such as name, sex, and date and place of birth
  • contact details, such as address and place of residence
  • data about absence due to sickness and other absence reports
  • data relating to exemption from compulsory education
  • data relating to educational performance, such as grades and examination results
  • education-related data, such as the name of your educational institution (or your child’s educational institution) and diploma data
  • financial data, such as your grant amounts, income level and bank account number
  • identification numbers, such as citizen service number (BSN) and student identification number.

Special categories of personal data

In some cases, DUO may also process personal data that falls under a special category. Some of the personal data we process is highly sensitive in terms of privacy. DUO only processes such special personal data in order to perform specific tasks, and when there is a specific legal basis for doing so. This includes:

  • data about your health, such as medical records or a doctor’s certificate
  • data on your ethnic origin (based on your nationality, country of birth and/or country of origin).
Examinations and diplomas

DUO processes personal data to register examination results in the register of education participants. This also includes diploma data, which is used, for example, to provide and verify information in Mijn diploma’s.

  • data regarding your personal relationships, such as the names and addresses of your parents, partner(s), children and legal representatives
